HELP - TREE - FAQs
7. OTHER FAQ:
A. How are the ID #'s determined?- The ID #'s start at the #1 and work there way up to the number of people in the Tree
- The ID #'s are given in order that individuals are listed in the GEDCOM
- No - These ID #'s can be viewed like a Social Security Number. Once assigned it remains. All indexing and references will be based on this ID #
- You will have to start a Blank Tree if you want to control who gets what ID #
C. I had duplicates in my GEDCOM - can I fill in the ID # Gaps after deleting them?
- Yes - But Not Easily. It is recommended to make your GEDCOM as clean as possible in the software/website used to create it BEFORE importing.
- You can Import a GEDCOM, then manually delete duplicate persons, then EXPORT your Tree as a GEDCOM. Then re-import that new GEDCOM. This will establish new ID #s and fill in previous gaps. (See EXPORT GEDCOM)
- If you do this - make sure you do it BEFORE adding Sources, Profile Workbooks, or Research Workbooks - as they all link to the ID # when created.
D. Why won't Sources & Media Import if you allow for them to be tracked later?
- This is primarily due to my own coding limitations and Excel limitations.
- Often sources are just blindly added to a tree based on hints and recommendations - so this file also encourages the manual import to assure the accuracy and relevance of them.
- Manually adding them also allows you only add sources for relevant people and to index them accordingly
