HELP - TREE - RESEARCH WORKBOOK ACCESS

The Research workbook is a separate Excel workbook that will link up to the data in the Tree workbook to allow you to summarize all the source details for a person.

There are a series of worksheets for each category of a person's life to allow easier analysis of a person's details to help draw more accurate conclusions and to narrow further research down.

You can both sync source data that was entered at the Tree workbook level OR add new sources directly in the Research workbook.

*Research workbook is also a macro-enabled workbook so be sure to enable macros, content, and editing if prompted.

CREATE:

You can only create a new Research workbook for someone thru the Tree workbook by doing the following:

1. Make the person you want to create one for the Primary Person.
2. Double click on "RESEARCH" (A).
3. Click on "CREATE" (B).

This will make a copy of the Research workbook template, rename it to the person's ID - Name, and save it to their own subfolder in the "RESEARCH" subfolder in the directory (C).

*Do NOT rename the files or move them from this location

You will open up to the "INDEX" worksheet. See the RESEARCH OPTIONS for more details on how to use the workbook.

OPEN:

There are (2) ways to open an existing Research workbook for someone:

1. Thru the Tree workbook:

  • Make the person you want to open a file for the Primary Person.
  • Double click on "RESEARCH" (A).
  • Click on "OPEN" (B).

2. Directly open the file:

The Research workbook links to the Tree workbook data but you can work on it independently while the Tree workbook is closed.

  • Open the applicable file in the "RESEARCH" subfolder in the directory (D).

DELETE:

1. Make the person you want to unlink a file for the Primary Person.
2. Double click on "RESEARCH" (A).
3. Click on "UNLINK" (B).

*This step only removes the person's link to the Excel workbook. The file can't be re-linked easily so be sure you want to do this.

4. Manually delete or move the file(s) from the "RESEARCH" directory (C).

You can now create a new Research workbook for the person following the steps above.

*Version 3.0 Research workbooks will be copied over when you use the "IMPORT TREE" option. These workbooks can continued to be used the same way you did before.

However the Research workbook has been completely updated as now sources are now stored in the Tree workbook instead of directly in the Research workbook. This change helps avoid having to enter the same source details over and over. The downside is to use the latest version of the Research workbook you unfortunately will have to unlink any older version, re-add sources, and then create a new Research workbook to start over.
