TREE - HELP - SOURCE DETAILS
When you add or edit a source's details you will be taken to the "SOURCE DETAILS" form.
This form has (3) tabs to navigate thru.
1. TYPE = Choose what type of source input you want to use:
- OTHER = Universal input for all sources
- CENSUS = input form specifically designed to follow the respective census input forms.
*This is only available when adding a NEW source.
2. SUMMARY = Enter the source date, description, citations, and link media files.
3. PEOPLE = Allows you to link people in your tree to the source. When you select a person it will open the PERSON DETAILS form to enter their specific details listed on that source.
*Use the TAB and ENTER keys to quickly navigate the fields.
* "ALT + Underline Character" is the keyboard shortcut for most options.
* Press the "EXIT" button at anytime to return to the SOURCE SUMMARY form.
TYPE:
(A) OTHER = Click this to enter a source using the universal input form. This option can be used for all sources, including censuses.
(B) CENSUS = Click this to enter a source using the Census input templates. This should only be used for US and UK census records. It provides input fields that should correspond exactly to the census for the selected year making input faster and more efficient.
Before clicking be sure to set the country (C) and year (D) of the census your adding. This will assure the right fields load up.
*Clicking either option will move you to the "SUMMARY" tab.
(E) MIN = Will minimize the Tree workbook but keep this form open to allow easier reference to outside data on the computer. Once minimized this button will then say "MAX". Re-click it to make the Tree workbook full screen again.
SUMMARY:
(A) SOURCE ID = This is the unique ID number automatically assigned to the source. They start at "100" and increase by (1) for each source. You can not change this number once its set.
(B) MONTH = Enter the NUMERICAL month that the source was created on. Use "c." if an estimated year.
(C) DAY = Enter the day of the month that the source was created on.
(D) YEAR = Enter the year that the source was created on (YYYY format).
*When a census record was chosen on the "TYPE" page - the date will automatically populate with associated census date. This may vary with the actual source so change as needed.
(E) DESCRIPTION = Enter a general description for the source. For example "PA BIRTH CERTIFICATE". The description must contain valid file name characters as it will be used in naming linked media files.
Invalid characters include: \ / : * ? < > | [ ] & "
This field will auto fill with previously entered description names.
*When a census record was chosen on the "TYPE" page - the description will automatically populate with the census year and country.
(F) CITATION/NOTES = Enter citations or notes for this source. Any input is allowed including blank.
(G) LINK = Click this to select a media file to link to this source. Just about any file can be linked (Image, PDF, Word, Excel). Once you click "SAVE" (H) a copy of the selected file will be made and saved into the "SOURCES" subfolder.
The name of the file will be "ID - Description input". Do not rename or move this file
*Once linked this option will then say "UNLINK". Click this to remove the link. If you do this before hitting "SAVE" then a copy of the file will not be made.
(H) SAVE = Click this to save the source details and add it to the database. This will advance you to the "PEOPLE" tab.
(I) GO BACK = This will take you back to the "TYPE" page to change the type of source. This option is only available if you did NOT save the source yet.
(J) VIEW = This will open any linked media file in your default program for that file type for reference.
*This option is only available if you linked a file already (G).
(K) MIN = Will minimize the Tree workbook but keep this form open to allow easier reference to outside data on the computer. Once minimized this button will then say "MAX". Re-click it to make the Tree workbook full screen again.
PEOPLE:
(A) NAME = Type in a person's name who you want to link to this source. This will filter the list of people (C).
(B) ID = Type in a person's ID number who you want to link to this source. This will filter the list of people (C).
(C) PEOPLE LIST = This is a list of all the people in your tree.
- Double click or press enter on the name of the person you want to link to this source. This will open the PERSON DETAILS form to input their respective facts for the source.
(D) LINKED PEOPLE = This is a list of the people currently linked to this source.
- Double click or press enter on the name of the person to edit their specific details in the PERSON DETAILS form.
- Single click to highlight that person if you want to unlink them (E).
(E) UNLINK = Will remove the highlighted person in (D) and all their details from this source.
(F) EDIT SUM = This will take you back to the SUMMARY page to edit the details for the source.
*To return to the People page just click "SAVE" on the Summary page.
(G) VIEW = This will open any linked media file in your default program for that file type for reference.
*This option is only available if you linked a file back on the SUMMARY page.
(H) NEW SOURCE = This will restart the process in adding a new source. You will be taken back to the "TYPE" page to choose what type of new source you want to add. You can press this at anytime.
(I) MIN = Will minimize the Tree workbook but keep this form open to allow easier reference to outside data on the computer. Once minimized this button will then say "MAX". Re-click it to make the Tree workbook full screen again.
